The Guard Dog

This story was written by Dick King-Smith

This story is about a dog that goes to the pet shop. Everyone thinks he is a little rough-haired guinea pig.  They think he has been put into the wrong cadge.  All the other dogs don't want to play with him. They think his bark is worse than his bite.  When he went to bark it was so dreadful.  Everyone hated it.   It sounded like nails being scratched on a whiteboard.  One day this little fat girl who was sucking her thumb came in and said, "I want that dog."   That dog was the scruffy dog that everyone hated.  The little girl got that dog.  A couple of days after she got the dog she said. "his nails are too sharp and his teeth are too."  He did a bark at the postman.  Then the family heard his bark so they took him to the pound.  Lots of people wanted him but when they heard his bark nobody got him. Then one day this old deaf man came to get a dog.  He got the scruffy dog.   And if he barked the man wouldn't hear him.
